Deck Building and Repair in Bear, Delaware

New decks, rebuilds, railings and stairs, built on real footings with hardware that lasts.

Decks built to last more than a few summers

A deck sits outside in the wettest, hottest and coldest weather we get. Humid summers keep the wood damp, winter freezes it, and the afternoon sun cooks the boards. A deck built with cheap fasteners, no flashing or shallow footings starts to move within a few years.

We dig footings below the frost line, flash the ledger where the deck meets the house, and use hardware rated for treated lumber. You will not see that stuff in photos, but it decides how long the deck lasts.

What we do

New decks

Ground level platforms, raised decks off the back door, and decks with more than one level and wide stairs.

Composite decking

Boards that do not splinter, rot or need staining. It costs more up front and saves you a lot of weekends later.

Pressure treated decks

The most affordable option, and a good one when it is framed right and sealed.

Railings and stairs

Vinyl, aluminum, wood or composite railings. We replace wobbly rails and worn stairs on decks that are otherwise solid.

Deck rebuilds

If the frame is sound, we can put new boards and rails on it. If it is not, we show you why and price a rebuild.

Deck repair

Soft boards, loose stairs, rusted hangers and posts sitting on blocks. We fix it or tell you if it is time to start over.

Why decks fail around here

Moisture

Boards that never fully dry out start to cup, split and rot, especially on shady decks and low decks close to the ground.

Frost

Posts set on blocks or shallow footings heave when the ground freezes, and the deck goes out of level.

Old hardware

Older decks were often built with nails and hangers that rust out in newer treated lumber.

How a deck build goes

  1. Plan and price

We measure, talk about how you use the space, sketch the layout and give you a written price.

  2. Permit

When the deck needs a permit, we handle the drawings and the application.

  3. Footings and frame

Footings go below the frost line, the ledger gets flashed, and the frame goes up.

  4. Boards, rails and stairs

Decking, railings and stairs go on, with hidden or coated fasteners.

  5. Walkthrough

We clean up and walk the deck with you before we call it done.

Wood or composite

Pressure treated pine costs less to build. Composite costs more but skips the yearly cleaning and staining. Over 10 or 15 years, a lot of people find composite worth it.

For composite decks we use Trex. Framing lumber comes from local yards like 84 Lumber and Grubb Lumber.

We stand behind it

We stand behind our work. If something we installed is not right, call us and we will come back and make it right.

Deck questions

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Most decks that are attached to the house or raised off the ground need one. Small ground level decks sometimes do not. We check before we start and handle it when it is required.

Should I build with wood or composite?

Wood costs less to build. Composite costs more but skips the yearly cleaning and staining. We can price both.

Can you replace just the boards?

If the frame, footings and ledger are in good shape, yes.

How long does a new deck take?

Most decks take one to two weeks once the permit is approved, depending on the size and design.
